If I had to use one word to describe myself, it would be eclectic. Not in the crazy cat lady hoarding sense, but in that I have a million and one ideas and interests.

Being born in rural Iowa to a hardworking, low-income family, I learned what it meant to scrape pennies and be frugal. We spent a great deal of our time in the winter hunting to put meat on the table and the summer putting fruits and veggies in the jar to cover the winter. It was from my childhood that I gained the love for homesteading, being self-sufficient and the rewards that come with it.

I was born with amniotic band syndrome affecting both of my hands and feet and wear a prosthetic leg on the right side. Last year while taking my youth group on an outing, I dislocated and broke my knee which required me to be off of work for 4 months with no short-term disability… and no income. I managed to make it through, thankfully, in large thanks to family and friends AND by putting my craftiness to work for me. It was during this time I created my handmade jewelry line Uniquely.B.You.Tiful. Just getting started, I wasn’t rich, but it was enough to help me get through a pretty rough time.

Fast forward almost a year to the day I broke my knee and I ended up again having surgery, this time, to re-amputate my leg. Still at the same job with no short-term disability, I had to figure out how to make ends meet once again, this time without having anything left in savings (I used that up the last time around) and without much of the extra support I had had prior.

While I’m still doing jewelry and working to increase my profits from selling handmade, I wanted to figure out something else that I loved and could possibly do something with. I began writing, having a couple articles published on The Mighty, and decided I loved to write. I loved to share my thoughts and ideas with others, loved the idea of being able to help others (I have a human services degree for Pete’s sake), and the possibility of making an income with it if need be┬áhad me hooked.

I finally put the ball in motion after a Pinterest binge (yes, I’m addicted :P) brought pin after pin of “how to be a successful blogger”, “even you can be a writer”, etc. to my feed. Doing a bit of research and coding, I got everything set up and here I am.

I hope to be able to share with you, my own experiences, business endeavors, crafting tutorials, recipes, and more as life unfolds. Thanks for visiting!
